There are several reasons why the European nations competed with each other to gain colonies in Africa. They all wanted to gain power and prestige. Ignoring Portugal's Empire though is to do it an injustice, and Portugal was one of the first European nations to set out to colonise the world. This, back in the fifteenth century meant colonising South America, but at the same time trading bases were also set up in Africa, in places such as Mozambique. Portugal would benefit for over three hundred years from their colonies in South America but by the nineteenth century they had lost their territories.
